All prospective students, whether seeking admission to the MM, BM, or Certification Only program, must interview with the Music Education faculty to be accepted to the Music Education program.

Prospective students: please let the Admissions office know if you would like to be considered for an interview (in person or online) during the audition/application process.

Current Peabody students: please contact the chair of Music Education to set up an on-campus interview.

All Applicants: What to expect at the interview?

If, after applying, you are invited to interview for the program, you can anticipate a 20-minute interview with members of the Music Education faculty in which we can get to know a little about you and your professional goals, and in which you can also get to know more about our program. There is nothing to prepare, please just dress professionally and arrive on time for your interview. We try to schedule interviews on campus whenever possible, but can arrange for online interviews if needed.

MM Applicants: What to submit for my teaching video and lesson plan?

Graduate applicants are asked to submit a 10- to 20-minute video showing examples of your best teaching. This can simply be a video of you teaching in your classroom, conducting a rehearsal with an ensemble, or clips of you teaching different lesson segments. We are NOT requesting a professional, polished video, nor a recording of a performance; please submit a video example showing you in action teaching music to a group of people of any age and ability level.

In addition, graduate applicants are asked to submit a sample, formal lesson plan. This can be a single lesson plan or a short unit plan, and no particular format is required. We only ask that it be typed, and show objectives, assessments, and procedures you have used or would use in a classroom setting. This lesson plan does not need to align to what is shown in the video.

BM Applicants:

At Peabody, Music Education is only offered as a competitive second major, designed to integrate seamlessly with and enhance the student’s primary area of musical study. Therefore, students can only be admitted into the Bachelor of Music Education degree program after they are admitted into their studio. Interested applicants are encouraged to interview with our department while they are on campus during the audition process.
